Check a book called "The Roots of English" by Robert Claiborn.
"God" is Germanic, but can be traced back to the early
IndoEuropean root mentioned above.

A completely different Indo European root is DEIW meaning to
shine, from which we get DEITY, DIVINE, ADIEU, and also JOVE,
JOVIAL, ZEUS, and the Germanic TIW, whose day was TUESDAY.

From the same root we have in Latin DIES, DIURNUM, DAY -
originally the "shining" (daylight) hours - whence DIARY or
JOURNAL, JOURNEY, DIAL, DIET, ADJOURN, and DISMAL (evil day).
