Announcing a mailing list for the discussion of
			 ANALYTIC PHILOSOPHY

I run a mailing list for the discussion of analytic philosophical
thought, its history, its literature, and other topics of related
interest. It is unmoderated and is accompanied by an anonymous ftp
site and this regularly posted notice.

Analytic Philosophy is commonly considered to be a methodology for
pursuing answers to traditional philosophical questions which focuses
on the analysis of language. Its roots are in the writings of Gottlob
Frege, G. E. Moore, and Bertrand Russell and it is often remarked that
it is the dominant philosophical tradition of the English-speaking
world in this century.

I recommend any of three books if you wish to become acquainted with
Analytic Philosophy.

 Ayer, A. J. (ed), _Logical Positivism_. 1959.
White, Morton Gabriel, (ed), _The Age of Analysis_. 1955.
Ammerman, Robert R., (ed), _Classics of Analytic Philosophy_. 1965.

[If anyone can recommend another anthology of more current
developments, please let me know.]

The intended audience is anyone who is well acquainted with at least a
few of the basic philosophical writings in the analytic tradition.
Profs and students alike are welcome, as are both professionals and
amateurs. My only request is that we minimize appeals to literature
in favor of spelling out our views in our postings. That said, i hope
to see the list include all kinds.

To subscribe (or unsubscribe) send a message to "analytic-request@cs.brown.edu"
with the word "subscribe" (or "unsubscribe") in the subject line and nothing
in the body. The anonymous ftp site is "ftp.cs.brown.edu:pub/analytic/"
and contains a copy of this notice and an archive of all past postings
to the list.
