Indeed they can.  But religion provides wonderful justification,
and is a great rallying point for the great unwashed.

If by some miracle all of the god-soaked awoke tomorrow and
realized that religion is a farce, we would still have
wars, we would still have intolerance and misery.

But some wars would be harder to keep fanned up.  Some intolerances
would have to face the cold light of reason.

And the world would be a far better place.
