I had no intention of suggesting that there are *only* three layers of
analysis; but that there are three categories into which the many, many layers
be usefully be dropped!

Re: semiotics. This field is characterised by assertion rather than evidence;
but it does serve to make clear the structural connectedness of narratives 
which try to record "truth", the reliance which must be placed upon assumption,
the degree to which the features which underpin a given  assumption is often 
predicated upon the very narrative (model) in which it is involved.
