I think you've got it right on this one.

To think we are really free of the ideas that society imposes
on us is mostly wishful thinking.  We are mostly sheep who
dream of being non-sheep, I believe.  Come to Japan, and
see what sheep we (all humans) really are.  Each of us is
the embodiment of our society, either in action or reaction.

This reminds of the line in a Monty Python movie where large
groups of people are chanting in unison "WE ARE ALL INDIVIDUALS!"
