Drew McDermott states that dualism must be avoided at all
cost for the usual reasons.

Parmenides did this well by stating all is One, there is no
Many.

Eastern philosphy (heaven forbid this being mentioned to Westeners)
also talks about the unity of consciousness and the phenomenal
world. The world is the result of consciousness.

The problem with our Western mind according to Whitehead
is that we like to think that somehow we are objective and
have an objective view of the universe (it's part of our
God complex).

And of course Einstein spent much of his life looking for
the unifying principle of matter and energy.

We have duality unfortunitely because of our limited view of
the world.
