   If consciousness depends on short terms memory then
I  guess we are only conscious of the past.  We never
then are aware of the moment and we are
aware only of where we have been, not where we are.
We somehow therefore are continually missing the here and
the now. 

   But this is illogical.  Certainly at the time
we are aware of something we are in the present.  Therefore
consciousness is not dependant on short term memory, long
term memory, time or space.  Consciousness is here and now.
we may me conscious of memories, like we may be aware of
thoughts,
