I talked with my system administrator, who somehow contacted the guilty
parties. After about a week, I was forwarded the following message:

From: jr@petz.han.de (Joerg Rade)
To: (long list including me but not you)

Hi,

I apologize for the many unwanted messages you have received form the
listserver.

Background:
INFO-CLS is a mailing list which _WAS_ bidirectionally gatewayed with
the Usenet newsgroup comp.lang.smalltalk.

As of Jan 12th I have removed the gateway entry. There may be still
some error messages coming to you, if your news- and/or mail-feed
produces some delays.

This gateway allowed for mail-messages produced by the subscribers to
the mailing-list to appear in c.l.s and vice versa postings to the
newsgroup to be distributed to the subscribers.

Therefore cross-postings to other newsgroups (e.g. comp.object etc.)
and replys to them as well were distributed via the list (and to the
error-producing listserver) as if they were postings to the gatewayed
newsgroup alone.

During Christmas/newyear lots of spams occured in comp.lang.smalltalk.
Due to this fact the spam-detecting policy of the gateway
(netnews@american.edu) was changed. This conflicted with the (up to
then legal and error-less) setup of info-cls.

The now erroneous entry in info-cls was 'Send= Private' corresponding
to the gateway adding 'Sender: netnews@american.edu' to the header of
the message.
This will be changed to 'Send= Public' (and rely on listservs improved
spam-detecting mechanism) when the gateway will be put in effect
again.

I have to assume responsibility for not responding earlier to your
error-reports, but I'm off-line during the week.

Since there are about 120 subscribers of INFO-CLS, including some
redistribution mechanisms, I would like to resume the service given
that a co-listowner volunteers.

Again apologies for the inconvenience.

-j|g (info-cls listowner)
