My history may be a bit rusty, but I believe that
Alex Stepanov's work in Ada was successful, just not
widely used.  He had some published material about
the Ada work, which I have not seen directly.  It
is listed in the references of his on-line paper
"Algorithm-Oriented Generic Libraries":

Stepanov's work was done using Ada83; it would
certainly be different if it were done today with
Ada95.
