It's possible.  I get the feeling that American and British usage
varies.  In American English, a carpenter is someone who puts up the
framing of a building.  The person who does the finer work is a cabinet
maker.

From your description, I gather that current British usage as evolved
from the original usage still current in America.  (The word itself
obviously derives from the French charpentier, from
charpente=framework, structure.)
