Are you using VW2.5? If so, switch on the Enhanced Tools in the settings.
This give you an improved menu editor that allows you to specify an ID 
for menu entries. Using this ID you should be able to ask the Builder
for the corresponding menu element.

Your complaints were justified for older versions.
