This most likely indicates that your image has been corrupted. When
you say re-installation doesn't help, does that mean you can
re-install a completely clean image and VM and still get the error. If
that's really the case then I see nothing left except your operating
system configuration. I think it's more likely you're doing a partial
re-install.

Try doing a complete re-install and see if you can run a clean image.
You might also try running one of your backup images. Then try loading
all your changes into the clean image (you _do_ have some kind of source
code control system, or at least fileouts, don't you?).
