Yes you are all correct and with the hindsight granted by a weekend
away from the problem I can see that I over reacted. You might too if
your deadline was as pressing as mine.

I wish, from an HCI point of view, that the error message and the
replacement for the comments were more sympathetic and more useful. For
example, why not try something like:

'Don't worry all may not be lost after all. See page n of the release
notes for how to restore your code...'

That reads a lot better than the rather cryptic error message that I
recieved. I think that software designers need to empathise with their
users and imagine the state of panic that they might occupy in such
situations.

Once again thanks to everyone who helped out. IU have found that VW is
not only the finest product around but its users are some of the most
helpful and forthcoming on the net.
