Look at the ImageReader class and its subclass for reading BMP images.
If you need to read GIF or XBM images, take a look at the URL

Note for everybody who has loaded the GIF-Reader.st from there:
The file ImageReaders.st contains an improved GIF reader (with interlace)
as well as a XBM reader and a framework for dynamically displaying
images while they are loading (I use this in my WWW Browser).
