I sent away for the QKS SmalltalkAgents literature, because
Smalltalk V/Mac is too slow. Like Smalltalk V/Mac (but unlike Smalltalk
V/Windows) QKS is an interpreter. But they carefully avoid using that
term. Here's their description:

"The virtual CPU is a software equivalent to a CISC chip married
to a portable OS kernel. The VCPU is designed to be layered on top of a
native CPU".

They also advertise that they generate standalone applications, but
the interpreter has to be installed on the target machine for a standalone
app to run. It also supposedly takes an hour to generate a standalone app.
The PowerPC version isn't out yet (current target is said to be Q1 1995,
slipped from Q2 1994).

However, at least you can call C if you need to do some serious
crunching.
