[I sent this to the robot-board mailing list, but it apparently didn't
make it out. So I'm posting it here.]

The current issue of _Science_ magazine has a cover photograph of a
group of eighth grade girls clustered around a LEGO robot. The cover
story concerns women in the sciences and mentions the historical
pattern of female talent falling out of the pipeline early. One idea
to prevent this is to encourage the younger ones by allowing them
access to early college level science courses.

The Boston area program described in the accompanying article uses
small scale robotics as a lure of sorts to show that science can
actually be fun at times. There is a B/W photo inside that has the
teenaged participants proudly wearing their 6.270 tee shirts.

[The above opinions expressed are my own; not necessarily held by others.]
