  I think Russel is correct.  There is probably a AA battery inside those D 
cells.

  If you want real NiCads, cheap(er than just about anywhere except in large
quantitys)  Try good old Digikey.  They have 4Ah D cells for $11.83 Q 1.
If you can buy 10000 or so everybodys prices run around $1/ Ah. (Except
Sanyo, who are the cadalac of batterys).


We were looking at 5 Ah D cells that would cost us about $5 each in those
quantitys, but we cut back to C cells, 2.4 Ah types (about $3 each in 10K)

I actually have gotten free samples (12 5-Ah D cells!) all shrinkwrapped
together and ready to go from some vendors.  You can arc wield with these!
