Just in case anyone's interested, a friend of mine used one of the Maxim
regulators to get the 5V at 5A needed for his robot with fantastic 
success.  He was able to get several samples for free including app
notes for free (even got the Motorola diode required for free).  The
only hitch was the 50uH inductor (able to handle 5A), but he was able
to build this himself with the aid of an LCM we found at a pawn shop.
Note, the part he used (don't remember which one now, but I could find
out) is adjustable so can supply other voltages as well.
