Several people expressed an interest in James Simmons' work on sonar
in bats. I spoke with him this morning about his recent work, and he
told me that he has an article in the upcoming issue of IEEE Spectrum.
In addition, the following reference has a lengthy bibliography:

@article(SimmonsCognition-89,
        author = {Simmons, James},
        title = {A view of the world through the bat's ear:
                 The formation of acoustic images in echolocation},
        journal = {Cognition},
        volume = {33},
        year = 1989,
        pages = {155-199}
)

I'm hoping to visit the "bat lab" in the near future and find out what
what's new and exciting. I'll try to summarize anything I think this
group would be interested in after my visit.
