Many of these books are not in print. Santa Clara City library is nice,
but they do not have the money for everything. Interlibrary loans are slow
(a month or more to get the book if at all) and not free ($1+ per search, 
+some university libraries charge for loans). 

In the world of programming, for example, Acta Informatica is/was a
nice periodical, but how people can afford a hundred dollar subscription?
It would be nice to browse at Ames RC, but since I don't have picture
ID how would I get past the gate?

Contrary to popular belief, you are not suddenly wealthy after graduation.
