Perhaps, in the States, the word never evolved beyond a description of 
marauding bands in the Southwest (as opposed to -gangs- in the 
heartland.)  Any theories on the first use of -to make out like a bandit- 
, now reserved for highly profitable, legal (?) returns on investment?
