The program you are looking for is NIH-Image.  Program author is Wayne 
Rasband (Wayne@helix.nih.gov). The program is for Macintosh and available 
by anonymous ftp from zippy.nimh.nih.gov.  The most recent version 1.57 
is for the Mac Power PC and some other recent Macs, 1.55 will run on all 
680x0 Macs.  The Mac Appl. Forum mailing list ist nih-image@soils.umn.edu
