You may want to take a look at Dr. Qiguang Lin's Ph.D thesis entitled,
"Speech Production Theory and Articulatory Speech Syntheis" (Dept. of
Speech Communication & Music Acoustics, Royal Institute of Technology,
Stockholm, 1990).  Chapter 4 is "A parametric model of VT area functions
and related studies"; the references in that chapter might help you
in finding what you are looking for.
