The AI is discussed in:

ITT's Reference Data Handbook for Radio Engineers
(this probably isn't the exact title).

Deller, et al.'s book, Discrete-Time Processing of
Speech Signals, Macmillan, '93, p. 582-4.

Kryter, K.D., "Methods for calculation and use of the
articulation index," J. Acoust. Soc. America, vol. 34,
p. 1689-1697, Nov. 1962.

Beware of some important caveats that Deller, et al.
mention (e.g., objective AI measures are usually
made from filter-bank SNR measures and we all know
the pitfalls of SNR type measures, especially w.r.t.
low rate speech coding).

Hopefully, others will post more recent references...

Regards,
Joe
