===============================================================================

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a doctoral student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Technion-
Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel. My present research for D.Sc.
is on speech enhancement for hearing in the so-called "cocktail party"
environment. A new approach based on spatial cues and perception
characteristics of speech sources has been proposed for the first time and is
currently being tested and improved. In the meantime, I am pursuing intensive
study in related fields (signal processing, speech production and perception,
speech analysis, beamforming array, hearing physiology and pathology, hearing
aids, etc.) which are of great interest to me. I am due to complete my D.Sc.
in the late Spring of 1995 and am interested in a post-doctoral research or
other kind of research opportunity with your Institution. Please note that my
areas of research interest are not limited to the above (see CV, attached).

I received the B.Sc. (1987) and M.Sc. (1990) degrees (summa cum laude) in
Biomedical Engineering from Tianjin University, China. During my
undergraduate studies (1982-87) I received education and training in the
fields of science, engineering and medicine, and ranked first in each final
examination of my program (five years in succession). I also received the
Excellent Student of University Scholarship every school year.

From 1987-90 I pursued my M.Sc. as a Research Associate with the
Bioelectronics Laboratory of Tianjin University where I was engaged in the
development of an intelligent ECG monitoring system and a biomedical signal
oscilloscope, among others. My M.Sc. research concentrated on analysis of
human intestinal sounds and the development of an intestinal sound analyzing
system.

After three years working with InterTech Corporation, Tianjin, China, as a
consulting engineer and a project manager, I began my doctoral studies in 1992
at the Technion, where I obtained the Louis and Rose Newman Fellowship and the
Lady Davis Fellowship.

Attached below is a copy of my curriculum vitae for your perusal. I would
appreciate receiving any information you may have regarding the availability
of a post-doctoral research position with your institute. Also, I would
appreciate it if, perhaps, you could pass my letter and CV on to others who
may be interested. I shall, of course, supply the names of references upon
request. I am grateful to you for taking time to consider my request and look
forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Chen Liu
