Speech Systems is still in business. But yes, they did go out of
business for awhile back in '91. Their Los Angeles office, where
the technical staff is located (all 4 of them), was severely
damaged in the earthquake. The building they were in was closed
down (condemmed) and they're now working out of their homes...

But don't discourage. Speech System's recognizer is the *best*. I
was at Comdex back in november and saw all the recognition
demos, including IBM's, and Speech Systems had the best product.
Continous, speaker independent, very large active vocabularies.
The only drawback to SSI's recognizer is the need to develop
context-free language models for your application. If the
application is trivial then SSI is over kill for your product.
