This posting is for a friend of mine, who in turn is trying
to help a friend of his...

I am new entrant to the field of speech processing and hence passing
on this request to experts in the field.

I have a friend who wants to know about "Spectral distance methods" and
"Quantitative measures of spectral distortion". Do you know any textbook/
journal article that explains this stuff? He is, I believe, working on
speech recognition; what he told me was when different people say the same
sound, say a as in father, they say it differently. How would one measure
the difference between two persons' a's? And then go on to recognise both
the sounds as a's. If you know of any references, I would appreciate it if
  you send me them.
