I was reading March 2 issue of EDN.  On page 115 there is an
advertisement for a $50 electronic compass with 2 degree accuracy
and 1 degree resolution in a matchbox-size module (has a quarter
sitting under it).

Draws <10mA at 5V and less than 1mA in power down.  Has a three wire
serial interface (BCD or binary).  Has no moving parts.

I don't have anything to do with this company, but it looks like
a useful gizmo for robotics.
