Hello Glenn,

Area CCD array can act as aline scan CCD. In this case the complete
image section of the  area CCD needs tobe "cleaned" by charge-reset or
electronic shuttering, before every new integration cycle.

A recent publication does give interesting details on these methods:
"Solid-State Imaging with Charge-Coupled Devices" 
by A.J.P. Theuwissen, pp 183-189,
