 The Sharp GP1u5X IR receiver works fairly well for this application. 
 Because of the 40kHz carrier frequency, you really can't go far past 1200bps
 communication, but I've tried it using the modules from Radio Shack (any
 branches in Germany?) and it works easily and cheaply. You'll need to 
generate 40kHz carrier for your transmitter LED and gate it with the 1200
bps signal.
