Well, let me add another thought to this thread.  The H8/330 from Hitachi 
has up to 58 I/O pins (if you can live with the internal 16K EPROM) and 
another 8 input-only pins.  It is a fast chip, cheap as OTP, and has many 
nice features and a fairly orthogonal instruction set.  200nS 16-bit adds 
from internal RAM (another 512 bytes) and includes 8x8 multiply and 16/8 
divide.

Just a thought.
