I posted the original article. Answers to questions are below.

I have decided to use DC motors as most replies indicate that they give
substantially better performance. It also appears that I cannot avoid using
a gearbox.

Probably. I'm still trying to get info on what type of DC motor is required
for good performance, and its likely cost.

Its a group project being done by half a dozen students that should be
completed late November.
