Here's suggestion number 5:

I dropped in to the local hobby shop ( Hobbyworld in Canberra ) and
picked up a couple of COMO Drills motor/gearbox combos, part no. 920D/A
( cost $35.00 ). They have multiple ratio gearboxes, giving speeds from 
1.5rpm to 5069rpm on 1.5 to 4.5V. Current consumption is fairly low at 
800mA max. 

A couple of us here at ADFA are using these motor/gearbox combos
in mobile robot projects and they work quite well.
