No need to harm anyone; you can pick up the signals through the skin.
Think of electrocardiograms or electroencephalograms; they only
require the electrode to be attached to the skin.

I believe this principle is used commercially in the Utah arm for
amputees.  Check Sarcos in the comp.robotics FAQ.
