There was an article in the 1992 R&A conference proceedings that might be
appropriate:

Lewis, Fagg, and Solidum, "Genetic Programming Approach to the Construction
of a Neural Network for Control of a Walking Robot," Proc. 1992 IEEE Int.
Conf. on Robotics and Automation, (Nice, France), pp. 2618-23.

This was done by people at Southern Cal.  I checked their WWW page and the
