I don't know why they should be cheaper, but the 'F1 should work as well as
any other '11 chip. The instruction set is EXACTLY the same.

There are some chip select registers that you may need to set up, perhaps
that's your problem? I believe there's a plan for a 'F1 based board on
cher.meida.mit.edu, perhaps it can give you some ideas... Coactive also
sells commercial boards based on the 'F1 so that chip itself should be fine.
