I dissasembled mine in hope of finding a serial port there.  I found one DC motor that controls all degrees of freedom through a clumsy mechanical clutching system.  


However one could take all that out and replace it 5 new controllabel motors spliced somewhere into the gearing mechanism.   Doing so would slo improve its accuracy.   The "resoloution " of the old system is about 1 cm.  But the rest of gearing system is pretty tight.  I have not doen any of these wonderful things.  But I intend to.  As soon as I figure out how.
