                  Position Description - November, 1994
           Factory Automation Systems & Components

                  TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
             DESIGN ENGINEERING OPERATIONS

           Company Background
Our client is a highly successful international
manufacturer of products and system components
utilized for factory automation and flexible
manufacturing , primarily in sophisticated assembly
applications. Among markets served are the
           international automotive, machine tool, electronics
and appliance industries. The company, located in
the Great Lakes region of the Midwest, is part of a
           major multinational corporation with diverse
operations in a variety of high-technology areas.
US sales are derived from the continually increasing
volume of domestically designed and manufactured
products, as well as from imported specialty
components. Growth of the US business over the past
two years has been rapid, and order backlog currently
           stands at historical highs.

           Position Summary

strategic and tactical direction of the company's
           design engineering functions which interact
extensively with the company's robust engineering
database system, a top-notch customer service
operation, and an unusually strong technical
           dealer/distributor network.

Position reports to the company's VP & General

Technical Director will work closely with these
individuals and will also interface extensively with
           European engineering counterparts. Customer contact,
directly and indirectly, will also be critical; US
and international travel is anticipated. Career
growth potential internally, as well as within sister
divisions and in corporate management, is excellent.

demonstrated track record of getting things done, one
who can take ideas and direct the process by which
they become innovative, value-added products that
meet or exceed customer expectations. Our candidate
will also be sensitive to costs issues, intimately
familiar with TQM/CIP philosophies, and up-to-date on
the application of advanced technologies & tools to
the design and manufacturing processes. Excellent
           development, analytical and organizational skills
are a must, as are solid communications and people
leadership abilities. Strong experience in managing
major design development projects is critical.
Familiarity with European design & engineering
standards would be helpful, and industry background
in assembly automation, material handling, controls
or power transmission is necessary. Minimum BSEE or
BSME required; MBA a plus. German language skills
           helpful.
