I have one of the Robotix kits--the last unit I assembled with it
is a few feet away from me. However, they proved not to be well
suited for general purpose robotic experimentation. The big problem
is that the design of the interconnecting pieces is such that they can
pull apart easily unless glued--in which case you obviously can't change
things anymore. I've found the Radio Shack Mobile Armatron to be much
easier to work with and much more capable of dealing with loads of
significant weight. Unfortunately, like the Robotix, the Mobile Armatron
is long out of production, and I wouldn't part with either of them.

I've seen some new robotic-oriented kits in stores, but I have not
investigated them.
