That must have been a typo unless of course the book is about
bicycling. :-)

A Turing machine is a conceptual device invented by Alan Turing in the
1930s that helps computer scientists prove whether or not a problem is
solvable by a machine.

I think Turing was also famous for breaking the codes generated by the
German's 'Enigma' machine during world war II but I could be wrong.
