Yes it is possible to do this.
The conversion is soley software, I seem to think I have seen software
advertised to do this somewhere in a UK PC magazine ( Probably PC Direct
or something similar.)

If you wish to read barcodes on tin cans that might pose a problem as I am
not sure of how the software would accomodate for the curvature of the 
barcode, however I reckon it can be done without too much hassle.
