Hi:

I'm fascinated with the 8051 microcontroller after reading the FAQ posted
by Russ Hersch and want to build something simple with it to start with and
then go from there. I am a graduate student in Mechanical Enginneering with
 a fair idea of electronics.

I contacted Intel who supplied me with loads of documentation on their MCS-51
family of ucontrollers. Great guys !!

Anyway, the problem is that now i have this bunch of discrete pieces of
information which i can't crystalize into a project to build.

Let's say, for starters, that i want a circuit that sends the string
"Hello, world\n" thru RS232 to my dumb terminal at 300 baud. To make the
software very simple let the circuit send this string only once after
power-up. Writing software is not a problem, what i need help on is the
 hardware.

What is the bare-minimum parts-list for this circuit ?

I think i can manage access to an oscilloscope, and an EPROM programmer.

Your help in getting me started is very much appreciated.

 Thanks in advance,

Rajeev
