This would be a 5-phase stepper motor, which is probably a very nice unit.

I have asked the factory guy from Oriental motors (Vexta) and I still
haven't figured out how it works.  He was trying to tell me that at
any time either 4 or 5 of the coils were energized,  but I couldn't see
how that works. 

They sell a driver they call a 'pentagon driver' that uses only 5 wires.
Some of their 5 phase motors come with just 5 wires with all the
coils hooked together in a series, and the 5 wires come from the 
connections between adjacent coils.  Factory guy was unable to tell me
how it works.

That driver they sell is in the hundreds of dollars.
