If you are doing speed control I suggest you start at about 100Hz.
Faster frequencies tend to give you smoother control.  But higher
frequencies reduce your efficiency since you invest more power into
switching your drivers on and off.  Most motors won't respond very
quickly, so 100Hz will be smooth enough.  But if you need smoother
control, increase the frequency until its good enough.
