For a better answer, look for a paper entitled "Drivetrain Design,
Incorporating Redundancy, for an Autonomous Walking Robot", by Gerald
P. Roston (me!) and Kevin Dowling, to be presented at the Space 1994
conference in Albuquerque, NM at the end of February. I am also
working on massaging the paper into a (hopefully) journal article that
goes somewhat deeper into the concept.
