You can make your robot with a microcontroller if you want, but for
something that simple, you might as well use an analog circuit. The book
"Mobile Robots" by Joseph Jones and Anita Flynn describes exactly how to
make the type of robot you wish. It is also a great start-up to robotics
in general. The full title is "Mobile Robots: inspiration to
implementation" published by A.K. Peters, Ltd. Good luck.
