Maybe it's because of the failure of 'real roboticists' to produce a
device even remotely analogous to real-world biots at a reasonable
price and accessibility.  The advantage to 'hobbiest' roboticists is
the spectrum of behavior they have to explore their own options (which
does include building their own controllers, motors and gearboxes).
