Waldo, my 115 lb teleoperated vehicle, uses Gates Cyclon lead-acid
batteries, and can run for a couple of hours at 'normal' use on a
charge. I've got an 8-volt, 25 AH pack for running the drive motors
(cordless drills) and a couple of 12-volt, 5 AH packs for running the
computer, radio gear, and camera. "Best" for any application probably
depends greatly on too many factors to say "This is best for you", but
the Cyclon cells have the output power, charge characteristics, and
other advantages of lead-acid without the hazards (liquid acid that
can spill if the vehicle overturns and bubble out when charging,
explosive gasses when charging). They are kind of expensive new, but
you can get them surplus fairly reasonably. Call Gates at (303)
744-4806 and ask for: Cyclon Battery Application Manual, GEP 0602-0001
