I have a blurry photocopy of a short paragraph from the Time, Dec 23,
'91 Technology column describing a 'tapeless tape measure' done with
ultrasound. The blurb claims 99% accuracy up to 9 meters and a list
price of $50, and the very fuzzy photo appears to show "Seiko
Instruments" across the bottom of the device.

I called Seiko (watches) who referred me to a distributor for Seiko
(printers) who told me others had called them about this device, but
they truly had no idea where to begin looking.

Has anyone heard of such a device?
