Yes, how about the "diameter"?  (No smiley)  This is not only true about
the monkey and similar tight situations, but it's a lot easier to  
measure than "dexterity".

If the monkey's hand in the plane of the box opening is considered an
approximate circle, perhaps the most accurate term is "maximal diameter".
